Change Your Complexion with IPL Photofacial

Hyperpigmentation and sun damage have met their match.

IPL | The best thing you can do for your skin

Fort Lauderdale | Weston | South Florida

Years of fun in the sun can cause serious harm to your skin. And sometimes, despite our best efforts, everyday activities have us under the sun’s damaging rays without realizing it. For example, UVA rays can penetrate glass and clouds, so that even when you are driving or outdoors on an overcast day, your skin will still feel the effects of sunshine. Over time, all of this exposure causes skin to become pigmented with unsightly spots and discoloration that even makeup cannot conceal. With a series of IPL Photofacials, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, and redness can be dramatically decreased.

Great Results, Minimal Downtime

IPL (Intense Pulse Light) Photofacial is a popular, minimal downtime treatment for the correction of pigment changes and redness associated with facial flushing and rosacea. IPL works by using light energy from a combination of wavelengths to penetrate into the dermis while leaving the epidermis (outside layer of skin) untouched. There is no damage to the skin’s surface, and patients have only minimal redness and slight swelling immediately after the procedure. IPL treatments can be performed on the chest, arms, and hands, as well as the face. Usually 2 to 4 treatments are recommended to achieve maximum effectiveness, depending on your skin type and color.

The benefits of ICON laser skin rejuvenation include:

  • Reduction of hyperpigmentation and reversal of the signs of sun damage
  • Improvement of redness associated with rosacea
  • Removal of unwanted facial veins
  • Improvement to skin texture and pore size
  • Boost in collagen production

Common Questions

Skin conditions that are successfully treated with an IPL laser facial include age spots, freckles, sun spots, liver spots, pigmented acne scars, birthmarks, superficial skin wrinkling, fine spider veins (broken capillaries), diffuse redness associated with rosacea, cherry angiomas, and even active acne reduction. You will also notice improvement of skin texture and tone.
Your medical skin practitioner will assess your skin and review your medical history to determine if an IPL Photofacial is right for you. Some patients start their first IPL facial treatment on the same day as their initial consultation. The treatment typically takes about 15 to 30 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated. Typically 2 to 4 treatments are required for optimal results. Treatments can be done every 4 weeks.
Your individual number of IPL treatments depends on the area treated and the severity of sun damage. Typically, 2 to 4 treatments are required, although patients with more extensive pigmentation may require more treatments.
Most patients start to see some results after the first treatment. While many patients see great results after the first session, it still takes 2 to 4 treatments to obtain the results you desire.

Immediate after-effects, if any, are minor. They may include redness and swelling, which disappear in a short time, usually within a couple of hours. You may notice a darkening of the sun/age spots. Over the next 5 to 10 days, the darkened spots will fade and flake off. Using sunscreen of SPF 30 or more will minimize sun damage and prevent the appearance of new sunspots.

After each treatment, patients are usually able to return immediately to their daily activities. Makeup can be applied to the skin to cover the darkened lesions. There is no post-treatment care, however, it is strongly recommended to avoid significant sun exposure and Retin-A use for 1 week after treatment. Always apply sunscreen daily (with an spf of 40 or higher) during treatments, even if you are not directly out in the sun

Avoid tanning and self-tanning products on the areas to be treated. Tanning decreases the color difference between the pigmented areas and the surrounding skin, making the treatment potentially more challenging, less safe, and less effective. Also avoid the use of photosensitizing medications (such as tetracycline or doxycycline) before a treatment, as this may exaggerate the skin response to treatment. It is also recommended to discontinue skin care products (such as Retin-A or salicylic acid) one week prior to treatment, as this may make your skin more sensitive.

An IPL (intense pulsed light) device is more color specific, targeting pigmented spots and blood vessels, leaving the surrounding skin essentially intact and untreated. Skin resurfacing lasers target the water content in the skin and thus treat both pigmented and normal skin cells.
IPL Photofacials can actually be performed on any area of the body. The most common areas are those most exposed to the damaging effects of sunlight. Other than the face, the most popular areas are the neck, hands, chest, and shoulders. IPL treatments should be avoided in hair-bearing areas of the face in men, since the treatment may also lead to unintended permanent hair reduction. In these areas, fractionated resurfacing would be a much better and safer alternative.
This treatment has minimal discomfort. Typically, most patients do not require any topical numbing prior to treatment.
Our ICON IPL device has an advanced Melanin Reader. This allows us to determine the amount of pigment in your skin, which will confirm a range of safe settings for the procedure. Darker skin types require more conservative settings and more expertise to ensure safe treatment.
