Dermal Fillers and the Aging Face

Are you starting to notice your face losing volume and wrinkles and folds appearing? Have you thought that it might be time to utilize Dermal Fillers but you don’t know where to start? For over 30 years Dermal Fillers have helped millions of faces look fuller and younger. Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that are injected beneath the skin to restore lost volume, smooth lines and soften creases, or enhance facial contours. More than 1 million men and women annually have chosen this popular facial rejuvenation treatment, that is a cost-effective way to look younger without surgery or downtime. But unfortunately, today with over a dozen dermal fillers available, there is confusion around what is best for your needs.

What are Dermal Fillers Made with Today?
There are a variety of FDA approved filler products that we use. In general, fillers are categorized by the substance they are made from. A note for your safety, always make sure that you are receiving FDA approved, brand name fillers, which are only available through a licensed medical aesthetic practice.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA)
Most dermal fillers available are made up of Hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that is already found in your skin. It helps keep skin plump and hydrated. HA fillers are typically soft and gel-like and very safe. The results are temporary, lasting 6 to 18 months or longer before the body gradually and naturally absorbs the particles. Most HA fillers are infused with lidocaine to help minimize discomfort during and after treatment.

Juvéderm products: Juvéderm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus, Voluma, Vollure

Juvederm Ultra is a thicker gel and is also used for the lips to give them more volume. It is also great for fine lines. Juvederm Ultra Plus is 20% thicker than Ultra and is a great filler for nasolabial folds and marionette lines. Juvederm Vollure is the newest member of the Juvederm family with longevity up to 18 months. Voluma is the thickest product in the Juvederm family and is great for the cheek area: adding volume and giving a subtle lift.

Restylane products: Restylane, Restylane Silk, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Refyne, and Restylane Defyne

Restylane Silk is the softest is this group and is used for perioral lines and adding subtle volume to the lips. Restylane (original) was the first hyaluronic acid dermal filler FDA approved in 2006. It is still a great product and is used for many areas of the face. Refyne and Defyne and Restylane’s newest products. The hyaluronic acid molecule is made more flexible, so it actually moves with you when making facial expressions. It has been research proven to look natural. Refyne is used for finer lines and Defyne is used for deeper lines. Lyft is Restylane’s thickest product and is FDA approved for cheeks and nasolabial folds. Lyft recently got a new FDA approval: to add volume to hands to make them look younger.

Merz products: Belotero® and Radiesse

Belotero is the thinnest filler available, making it my go-to choice for tear troughs (under eyes). It does not have a risk of a tyndall effect (a bluish-tint that can appear from the filler under thin skin) which is why it is my favorite for under eyes. Radiesse is on the opposite end of the spectrum: the hardest filler available. It is composed of calcium hydroxylapatite which is found primarily in our bones. It is one of my favorites for cheeks because of the thickness. It gives cheeks a great lift and subtle volume. Radiesse is also FDA approved for adding volume to the hands.

Sculptra

Sculptra is in a class of its own and is my favorite product of them all. It contains poly-L-lactic acid which has been used for many years in medical devices, such as dissolvable stitches. Poly-L-lactic acid products are technically classified as “collagen stimulators,” as their main mechanism to smooth fine lines is by helping your skin rebuild natural collagen. Sculptra requires a series of treatments (spaced out every couple of months) and the results are gradual and natural. Typically, with one treatment, I can address multiple areas such as temples, cheeks, hollows in the lower cheeks, marionette lines, nasolabial folds, and jawline. Results can last at least 2 years.

Every dermal filler has its unique quality with each have their place in the aging face. Also, various patients have better results with different fillers, so it is important to consult with your medical practitioner to see which is the right one for that specific area and the look that you desire personally. Fortunately, I am both a National Trainer with Allergan, the makers of Botox®, Juvederm®, Voluma® and Kybella® AND with Galderma®, the makers of Restylane®, Lyft, Refyne, Defyne, Silk, & Sculptra so I use my 16 years of experience to determine what dermal filler is right for your needs. In this National Trainer role, I train South Florida’s local Doctors and other medical practitioners on understanding and injecting these Dermal Fillers.
