While removing a tattoo is not nearly as fast as getting one, there are still options to eliminate unwanted ink.
- Cover-up – the quickest option is to re-ink over the unwanted tattoo. This requires an incredible amount of ink and often does not leave the desired aesthetic outcome. If unhappy with the outcome, it becomes even that more difficult to remove. Some patients opt to do 2-3 sessions to significantly lighten the ink before choosing to cover-up the remaining ink.
- Surgical Excision – depending on where the ink is located, this may be an option if there is enough skin surrounding the tattoo. This will leave a linear scar.
- Laser Tattoo Removal – the option with best aesthetic outcome and least risk of scarring, although it does require a time commitment, averaging 6-12 treatments with very short appointment times. There are many factors that affect the number of treatments needed including but not limited to: amount of ink in the tattoo, colors, age of the tattoo, location, how many times it was inked, etc.
Picosecond lasers, such as Ageless Medical’s PiQ04, are the newest lasers promising the fastest and most effective tattoo removal. The laser fires pulses at a trillionth of a second, the energy is so brief that it significantly decreases the risk of damage to the skin. The targeted energy shatters the ink into smaller pieces in which your own immune system will slowly process over the following weeks.
The treatment time varies depending on the size of the tattoo but typically sessions are scheduled for 15-30 minutes. I use a cryo chilling device during treatment to reduce discomfort. Although your skin will heal within 1-2 weeks, the true results of a session won’t be apparent until at least 6 weeks following treatment. I advise my patients to treat every 8 weeks. Attempting to treat prior to this time can result in unnecessary damage to the skin and precede scarring. On average, patients may need anywhere from 6-12 treatments for optimal results. Black ink is the easiest to remove, while color is generally less responsive to treatment. Following treatment, redness and swelling is common, along with the potential for crusting/blistering.
Cosmetic tattoos (flesh colored, white, brown, etc.) are extremely difficult to treat and often turn a different color following attempted removal, therefore, it is not recommended to treat cosmetic tattoos, such as microblading.
