Lip augmentation is one of my absolute favorite treatments to provide for my patients. Contrary to what is often seen in the media, lip fillers are popular among men and women of all ages. Lip enhancement often gets a bad reputation due to the overly augmented results that we’ve all seen. Due to the popularity of this treatment, there is a lot of fantastic work that often goes unnoticed, along with a lot of bad work that can’t be missed.
Consultation
During my initial consultations with first time inquirers into the world of lip injections, one of the most common comments I hear is that the patient doesn’t want to “look like a duck”. When lip filler is placed correctly and gradually depending on the overall goal of each patient, the augmentation looks incredibly natural. Treatment can be customized per patient, some are looking to smooth lines and hydrate the lips, while others are looking to significantly enhance volume and/or try to correct underlying asymmetry. Goals and concerns are addressed and determined during consultation.

Products
There are a plethora of products that can be used for lip augmentation. It is critical that your provider ONLY uses FDA-approved products. At Ageless Medical, we carry both Juvederm and Restylane products, both of which can help you achieve whatever goals you have for your precious pout! There are products like Juvederm Volbella that hydrate and smooth the lips and then there are more voluminous ones like Restylane Defyne. All of the hyaluronic acid fillers can be layered over time, to achieve the lips of your dreams!
What to Expect
I always advise my patients to schedule lip augmentation at least two weeks prior to any major event or social engagement. Some other helpful tips include:
- avoid ibuprofen, aspirin, fish oils, and other herbal supplements at least 1 week prior (unless medically necessary)
- pre-treat for cold sores, if you suffer from frequent outbreaks
- arrive to your appointment 15-30 minutes early for topical numbing
The procedure feels like tiny tender pinpricks that are alleviated with lidocaine that is combined in the lip filler. Following treatment, you can expect bruising and swelling. There is no way to guarantee that bruising will not occur, so it is always best to expect it!
